Share Six | March 2018 | Contrast

For the Share Six blog circle this month, we explore CONTRAST.

During yet another arctic blast into the prairies (-30°C with windchill -38°C) mid-February,  I attempted to photograph freezing bubbles during the early morning sunrise. These images are my results.

A local photographer,  who does the most amazing severe storm and aurora photography, recently shared his “recipe” for producing freezing bubbles.
– 200ml warm water
– 35ml corn syrup
– 35ml dish soap
– 2tbs sugar

I thought these images fitting to the theme this month.  Warm and cool tones… smooth and textured… light and shadow…

Share Six | February | Color

As winter seems to drag on, a little bit of cabin fever and winter gloomies have set in.  Due to a recent knee replacement surgery, I’ve not been able to get out much, with all the snow, ice and cold we have been experiencing so far.  Katherine’s choice of theme this month was like a welcome reprieve…COLOR!  A grocery store bouquet, a macro lens, and some window light…

Share Six | January 2018 | Winter Light

There have been some amazing sunsets this winter, and I am fortunate enough to be able to capture them from my front yard during the winter months. I love how the snow reflects the light, varying in color and tone from deep violets to bright peaches.

Share Six |December 2017 | Wonderland

“I wonder if snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

~Lewis Carroll

Share Six | November 2017 | Harvest

I’m joining the wonderfully talented team at  Share Six once again, and have stepped into this months theme, HARVEST.  At the time of rejoining the team however, harvest, in the traditional sense, was complete in my rural community.  That being said, I have always equated harvest with autumn, as the timelines of these events overlap.   The gorgeous colors of autumn amaze and dazzle. To be sure, this is my most favorite season.  Frosty mornings and cooler days, and an abundance of color! Once the fall foliage emerges, country drives and woodland walks are in order.

Share Six | February 2017 | Shadows

All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow.

~Leo Tolstoy

The beauty of a winter sunset… pastel tones of pink cast by the setting sun…tones of purple that become the shadows… colour the snow-covered landscape…

The theme for Share Six this month is BOKEH. And what a perfect month for this theme! Bokeh is a technique that is always popular at this time of year – Bokeh Christmas lights images

It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas…

Share Six | November 2016 | Texture

I love Autumn.  The colors and textures found in the once lush green landscape begin to take on a whole new appearance.  The softness of summer gives way to the hard edges and textures of autumn.  I love how time also adds texture.  Weathered wood and a rustic patina found on old homestead fences displays texture.  I love how texture adds impact to images that can be just as powerful as bold color, leading lines, or dramatic scenery.  Texture often adds detail, dimension and even drama to an image.

Share Six | October 2016 | Time

He has made everything beautiful in its time.

 Ecclesiastes 3:11

I am a country-dweller.   I love to cruise the back roads looking for inspiration and beauty,  where least expected.  One of my favorite things is looking for old, long forgotten structures.  Time has given these abandoned buildings an infinite beauty…

The way nature takes over, changing the facade, adding character…the way time weathers the wood, rusts the hardware, giving these long forgotten structures such beauty in decay. The textures and tones and colors that emerge…etched by time.

I ponder over these weathered and neglected buildings, and I think, tell me your story…
