30 Minutes in the Life | January 2020

January Light

“Thirty Minutes in the Life” will feature ladies from around the world as we capture 30 minutes in our lives as mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends {and photographers}.

“We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives…not looking for flaws, but for potential.”

Ellen Goodman

January… winter settles in and brings with it the bitter cold and snow.  This month , we endured  over a week of constant, unrelenting extreme cold temperatures.  Much too cold to venture outdoors for very long at all, without risking frostbite and hypothermia in a matter of minutes.   So, this month, I enjoyed the beautiful  sunsets on these frigid January evenings from the dining room window.

During this season I embrace the low light that is winter, and these two characters are willing participants,  if only for a few moments.

Autumn Texture

“Thirty Minutes in the Life” will feature ladies from around the world as we capture 30 minutes in our lives as mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends {and photographers}.

We recently welcomed a new member to the family…a rescue pup we call Annie.  She has settled in beautifully and enjoys daily walks around our property.  On one such walk, we skirted the woods behind the house.  It was overcast and cold this day.  As the wind periodically gusted, a shower of leaves would fall from the towering trees above to the ground around us, much to Annie’s delight.

It seems as though the long awaited abundance of color Autumn gives us, has been rather brief this fall.  Between the early snowfalls and days of strong winds, there is barely a leaf to be seen on the trees.  Yet, there are a few that valiantly cling to a branch here and there.  They carry a beauty all their own, as they cling onto the branches in solitude.

“Steer me to an autumn path to travel all alone.  Fall leaves the finest company; rustling in my heart like home.”

~Angie Weiland-Crosby

Autumn Sunflowers

30 Minutes in the Life | September 2019

“Thirty Minutes in the Life” will feature ladies from around the world as we capture 30 minutes in our lives as mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends {and photographers}.

“Notice that autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature.” -Friedrich Nietzsche

I decided to leave all the volunteer sunflower plants that sprouted underneath the bird feeders to grow, and see how they would fair.  The other morning, while enjoying a cup of coffee on the front deck, I noticed that the honey bees and bumble bees had found them.  My little patch of sunflowers have made it into fall, and are  hive of activity these days.  I am uncertain if they will make it to fruition, as there is snow in the forecast.  For now, I will enjoy these cheery sunflowers on these crisp fall days.

Wild Horses

30 Minutes in the Life | August 2019

“Thirty Minutes in the Life” will feature ladies from around the world as we capture 30 minutes in our lives as mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends {and photographers}.

I recently joined a couple of photographer friends for a daytrip down the the foothills on the eastern slope of the Canadian Rockies in search of wild horses.  For more than 250 years, Sundre, Alberta, has been home to roaming wild horses, known as “the Wildies.”    We set out to travel the back roads full of anticipation…  and we were not disappointed.

The time spent with a wild horse band can vary. Some horses keep their distance and upon spotting you, disappear into the forest. Others look at you with curiosity, then go right back to grazing. It is important to stay calm when you are in their presence. Once the stallion or lead mare determines you are nothing to fear, you can spend a a fair amount of time with them.

Lake Life

30 Minutes in the Life | July 2019

“Thirty Minutes in the Life” will feature ladies from around the world as we capture 30 minutes in our lives as mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends {and photographers}.

I am fortunate to live close to one of our favourite fishing lakes and we often head out to fish in the early evening.  It is not uncommon for pop-up summer storms to cut our fishing activities short, though.  This was one such evening.  I love the cloud formations as the storms slowly build.

There is a point on the lake that the local fishermen call “Pelican Point”.  As we slowly cruised by,  I was able to snap a few photos of the  inhabitants of this particular area. Among the pelicans, seagulls and other shore birds preened and rested in the sun as the storm approached.

The Secret Garden

30 Minutes in the Life | June 2019

“Thirty Minutes in the Life” will feature ladies from around the world as we capture 30 minutes in our lives as mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends {and photographers}.

There is a small deck just off the master bedroom.  I often enjoy my morning coffee there when weather permits.  This is one of my favourite places, to enjoy the quietness of  the early morning.  The first few hours of morning offer a quiet peacefulness and opportunity to reflect, refresh and connect with nature.

My favourite time to enjoy the back deck in the early morning is late spring.  My small deck is surrounded by lilac trees, and in June they burst forth with the most fragrant blooms.  Their heavenly fragrance attracts the first bees and swallowtail butterflies to my garden.
